Is your own domain worth it?

Is your own domain worth it?

·

Attaching a domain takes one DNS record and about a minute. The question worth answering first is whether you need one at all — for a lot of uses the shared domains are the better choice, and the honest answer depends on what keeps going wrong for you.

What changes when the domain is yours

Shared domainYour own
Lifetime of the addressa few daysas long as the registration
Who else may open itanyone who guesses the nameanyone who guesses the name — but nobody knows the domain
Chance a sign-up form refuses itreal, and rises as the domain gets knownnear zero at first
Who can make it stopwhoever added it, or their expiry dateyou
Costnoneroughly a coffee per year

The third row is the one that usually decides it. A shared domain becomes less usable the more people use it — being well known is exactly what puts a domain on block-lists. A domain nobody has seen before has no reputation to hold against it.

When it is worth it

When it is not

⚠️
A domain of your own removes the block-list problem for a while, not permanently. What it removes permanently is the dependence on somebody else's renewal date — which is the failure that actually costs people their addresses.

What it does not change

There is still no password. Anyone who knows the full address can read what arrives at it, exactly as with a shared domain. Owning the domain narrows who can guess; it does not add a lock.

And sending is still not possible. That is a property of the service, not of the domain — why, in one paragraph.

Choosing the name

Boring beats clever. A short, unremarkable name in an ordinary zone attracts no attention from the forms you will use it with — which is the entire objective. Avoid the zones known for giving domains away; they carry a reputation you did not earn and cannot shed. What to look for, and why free is a trap: where to get a domain.

Setting it up

One MX record, and it is the same for every registrar. The exact values, the trailing-dot gotcha and how to confirm it took effect: use your own domain.
